Pitching Horseshoes, Pits Dimensions, And Kids Fun Games
Perhaps one of the simplest and least expensive fun games for kids is pitching horseshoes. To be sure, it is not only for kids, many adults take this game very seriously and have official tournaments and gatherings around the country. It is certainly not just a game for rednecks either!
There are many brands of horseshoes on the market, some of the most popular are Alan Francis horseshoes. They cost around $65 per pair, with volume discounts. These are for the more serious pitcher, you can easily find them at most local sporting good stores or discount stores.
If you wish to construct a backyard horseshoe court on your lawn, it is very simple. Essentially, all you need are two stakes in the ground. Measure off 40 feet and drive two 36 inch x 1 inch iron rods at an angle of about 12 degrees from vertical. The angle should be so that the stakes lean toward each other. Drive them into the ground until 14 inches is above ground.
Next, place foul lines at 27 and 37 feet from the each stake. Use the 27 foot line for children under 18, women and elderly men. Use the 37 foot for grown men. Now loosen the dirt around each stake and start pitching! Really, these are the basics and you can gradually improve your court as you play.
So, the basic horseshoe pits dimensions for making a family fun place is a 40 foot distance between stakes and a 27 foot and 37 foot foul line. There are other technical dimensions for the professional or serious competitor, but this is really all you need for the backyard. The rules are simple as well, you can also find these with a kit or online. You can also set up teams and have your own challenge in a tournament.
You can set up some game tables and chairs, set up a barbeque and have a great time! If you have more room, there are other simple games kids love to play with the family.
Other fun games for the family
It does not take much to set up a volleyball court. There are many outdoor systems available at very reasonable costs. You could even play it in the swimming pool or have a beach set. You just need some basic equipment.
Other family games, such as badminton, require only a small investment as well. You don't need to buy the best raquet available, a quality set will do just fine. You can check out one of the rackets review sites and learn about better ones, such as the Vonex Amortec 150.
When it is rainy, you can always go inside and play your Harley Davidson pinball machine or maybe a game of billiards. You can even find pool table rentals that work quite well and save you a lot of money. Or, you could play table tennis inside. Check out the USATT site to find out more.
Horseshoe pitching is a great American pastime that requires no training or special equipment. All you need is a decent sized backyard, two stakes in the ground and some horseshoes to get started.
As you can see, you can take an affordable vaction at home and this often works best with kids anyway. You don't even need a cheap cruise to the Caribbean or a family resort. Make you own fun and make a memory.
