For many years my family returned to the same camping site in Vermont. We still love to reminisce about the many good times we had there. It truly became one of those family fun places that hold precious memories.
Initially I made an effort to get the best tent I could for my family. Eventually I had to buy two 2 man tents (also known as a pop tent) and one 6 man tent to accommodate everyone. It was money well spent and I still have all three tents, though one is getting rather worn.
Buying the best tent is a good idea because a cheap one will fail you and cause you misery. There are many excellent suppliers, such as Kelty, Sierra, Marmot, Wenger, Coleman, EMS and others. If you watch the sales and are patient, it is possible to save a great deal of money by buying at a discount.
The fabric should be water-resistant, not waterproof. The fly that covers the tent is waterproof and using the fly allows air to circulate. Otherwise you will get very uncomfortable and sweaty.
Make certain that the tent comes with a good storage bag, which will store the tent, stakes, poles and fly. A poorly made bag will tear and you will always be looking for the pieces.
There are many great spots around the country to have your own adventure, most of them are probably close to home. In fact, it is advisable to begin at home and venture out from there to make sure everything works properly.
If you intend to backpack, your tent needs are much different than if you are driving into a state camping ground, such as the one in Vermont or the Poconos. Canvas tents are alright for car camping, but far too heavy for backpacking. You really want an ultralight one to be carrying around.
Tenting is a great getaway for kids and toddlers. It is surprising how hardy little people can be. The can carry their own little pack and help out with chores. Use a checklist beforehand and include them in the process, it is a great learning tool.
If you are car camping, you will be able to bring along things like horseshoes, badminton, bocce ball and even a volleyball. Most campgrounds have a volleyball court and you can meet other campers and have a great time.
